Estuary Explorers

(Scroll down for Beach Explorers class details)

Join Dragonfly Field Labs to learn about the creatures that make the estuary their home.

Activities include:

  • Using tools to test the temperature, salinity, and clarity of the water

  • Scavenger hunt through the shore for plants and animals

  • Using dip nets in the water - fish crabs, snails, shrimp, and more have been caught!

Students will think like a scientist to learn what makes the estuary so special. They will use their skills of observation to make inferences and find many amazing creatures to study.

Who is This For

This class is appropriate for kids ages 5+. The class will have fun, hands-on learning to engage younger kids, while still being challenging enough for older kids. All students will need to be accompanied by an adult; this is not a drop off program. Please see our FAQ page for any questions.

What to Expect

We will begin by doing some water quality testing using tools that scientists use. Then we will observe the land and land creatures before venturing into the water with nets to see what we can catch. The contents of each class will be totally unique depending on the time of year and the tides, so you never know what we will find!

This location has no running water and only portapotties. I would recommend throwing a jug of water in the car for rinsing off before heading home.

What to Bring

Water shoes or sneakers MUST BE WORN, shorts or clothes that can get wet (swimsuits are ok), water bottle, sunscreen; optional: personal nets or buckets

*Note*: This location is a fishing spot and boat ramp, so there may be debris on the ground. Everyone MUST wear a shoe that encloses the foot(water shoes, closed toed sandals, sneakers, etc.) at all times or they will not be allowed into the water. Please do not wear flip flops or crocs, as crocs float and can cause you to loose your footing.
